    1) European governments used the army to suppress them by force 2) The stimulus for the initial revolution came from the poor and working classes (for example,the storming of the Bastille).However,once the monarchy had been overthrown,the middle class provided the political leadership for the new republic.As the aims of the middle class were different to those of the working class,they essentially hijacked the revolution for their own purposes.
