I was just looking at a trend of the recent Celtics early first round draft picks, and all of them except Dee Brown, Chauncey Billups, and Joe Johnson had something bad happen to them or have never had success.
1986- #2 Overall- Len Bias- Dies of drug overdose night after the draft
1987- #22 Overall- Reggie Lewis- Dies of heart failure in 1993.
1988- #25 Overall- Brian Cook- Role Player, got 3 Rings with LA
1989- #13 Overall- Michael Smith- Waived in 1991, never came back.
1990- #19 Overall- Dee Brown- Successful NBA player!
1991- #24 Overall- Rick Fox- Ultimate Disappointment wherever he was
1992- #21 Overall- Jon Barry- Works at ESPN, nothing special in NBA
1993- #19 Overall- Acie Earl- Out of the league in four years
1994- #9 Overall- Eric Montross- Epic Fail
1995- #14 Overall- Eric Williams- Tore 3 ligaments in his knee in 1997
1996- #6 Overall- Antoine Walker- Robbed and gunpoint twice during his career, now facing DUI charge.
1997- #3 Overall- Chauncey Billups- Successful, but not with Celtics
1997- #6 Overall- Ron Mercer- Injury problems shortened his career
1998- #10 Overall- Paul Pierce- Stabbed 11 Times in 2000, nearly died
1999- N/A
2000- #11 Overall- Jerome Moiso- Out of league after a few years
2001- #10 Overall- Joe Johnson- Great career, just not in Boston
2001- #11 and #21- Kedrick Brown and Joe Forte- Both out of league.
2002- N/A
2003- #16 and #20- Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones- Both traded during the draft, both no longer in the NBA.
2004- #16 Overall- Al Jefferson- Now with T-Wolves, tore his ACL, has never been on a winning team.
2004- #24 and #25- Delonte West and Tony Allen- Both constantly hurt role players.
2005- #18 Overall- Gerald Green- Rides the bench in Dallas
2006- #7 Overall- Randy Foye- Traded to Minnesota…enough said
2007- #5 Overall- Jeff Green- Traded for Ray Allen, solid player.
2008- #30 Overall- JR Giddens- Has barely played this season <10mins
So, want to get drafted by the Celtics? This list of epic failures should change your mind.
1988- #25 Overall- Brian Cook- Role Player, got 3 Rings with LA
You mean Brian Shaw… Brian Cook was the Lakers disappointing draft pick.
1991- #24 Overall- Rick Fox- Ultimate Disappointment wherever he was
No way is Fox a disappiontment. Especially as a 24th pick.
1994- #9 Overall- Eric Montross- Epic Fail… thats an understatement! LOL!
Dahntay Jones- Is the starting two guard for Denver.
Al Jefferson – Still has a bright future and gave the Celtics KG
2006- #7 Overall- Randy Foye- is having a career year.
I think you should look up the Clippers for worse draft picks.
Plus Slick Rick Pitino was trying the make the Kentucky Celtics when he coaching. Mercer should of never been drafted that high and Chauncey should of gone to the University of Kentucky cause he wouldn’t of been traded.
1997 – 2004 not bad at all
-Billups
-Pierce with 10th pick
-Joe Johnson 10th pick
-Al Jefferson – 16th pick
PG – Billups
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Paul Pierce
PF – Al Jefferson
C – ?
That’s enough to win multiple championships…
Can’t believe that you said Rick Fox was a disappointment, he was a great defender and 3-point shooter for the Lakers and he won 3 championships.
Other than that, you were right by most accounts.
Pierce is their best drafted player in recent years. Jefferson and Green help the Celtics win the title.
Montross, Walker, and Mercer were very good college players with tons of hype.
haha,
Giddens is going to start playing now, man Len Bias not playing in the NBA hurt me for days post his death, i was so disapointed he could have been one of the greatest, rest easy lenny.
its not like these players havent turned out to be good players, most have.
- West got hurt but hes playing good. along with Al Joey J.
Billups and more.
- Also you could probaly find this problem with many of the teams in the NBA
